By the banks of the Tamraparni river, under a tree three miles form a large city, Shri Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya stayed. The king of the nearby state was very ill and someone told him, “If you construct a gold statue of yourself and gift it to a Brahmin, the Brahmin will die and you will be cured.”
The king immediately called for ninety pounds of gold and had when the statue was made he called a Brahmin to accept it but when he saw the form, he refused. He then called for his religious guide, but when he saw the statue. He fell down and observing many evil opened did not accept it. Then the king called for all the Brahmins of the city, but when they saw the statue as death personified they too refused the gift and said, “Even if you threaten to kill us, we will not accept this gift.”
The distressed king then retired to the banks of the Tamraparni awaiting his death. There he saw Shri Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya and said to him. “This land is doomed because the holy class is devoid of spirituality.”
The guru questioned “Is your world Godless?”
The king explained, “The right of a king is to make gifts to the Brahmins but my Brahmins have refused my offerings.”
Shri Mahaprabhuji replied, “I will come tomorrow to accept you gift.”
The king felt assured and returned to the palace. The next day the king made all the arrangements and when Shri Mahaprabhuji arrived he saw the statue had one finger pointing he pointed three back at it. The statue then bowed its head and Shri Mahaprabhuji called for a metal smith to melt the statue down and told the king to give a small amount of gold to the thousand odd Brahmins that had gathered there.
The king then asked, “why did the statue pointed one finger and why did you point three bach the guru explained, “the statue asked me if I make Gayatri mantra once a day. I raise three fingers to show that I do Gayali three limes a day. For that reason, it bowed to me.” He continued.
“You should never make such a large gift for the removal of your own pain, the person who accepts such a gift will certainly die. By giving small gifts to many Brahmins, no harm will come to anyone.”
Later the king and many other souls became Shri Mahaprabhuji’s disciple. Later Shri Mahaprabhuji returned to the river and repeated the Gayatri mantra for three days.
